Research has consistently shown that students who have access to art in school have better academic outcomes, including better grades and higher rates of college enrollment and educational attainment.
Through the arts curriculum at San Juan Diego Academy we help enhance our students’ self-expression and creativity and help them develop an appreciation of art in its many forms. Creating art not only nurtures our students’ creativity, but also helps them develop problem-solving skills and challenges them to think critically and analytically.
While art is incorporated in a variety of modes within each classrooms and across multiple subject areas, students in grades K-8 also take part in formal art class once a week. During this weekly art instruction, students are introduced to different elements—color, texture, space, shape, line and form, based on the grade level of each class. Throughout the year, students create a variety of projects using what they have learned. In addition, students and staff attend the annual Art Prize Competition in Grand Rapids, where artists from around the country display their artistic creations. This yearly event provides San Juan Diego Academy students with the opportunity to view a broad range of art work and explore a variety of mediums and subjects.
