Grand Rapids resident David Despres grew up in southern Texas in the Depression era and attended a Catholic school where many of his fellow classmates were from Mexican families. This childhood experience instilled in him a lifelong care and concern for access to education for Mexican-American students. For this reason, he established the Achille & Irene Despres, William & Andre Scholarship through the Grand Rapids Community Foundation. The scholarship is designated for a student of Mexican heritage and residing in Kent or Ottawa County and who will be attending an accredited college/university for undergraduate studies.
