A referral to Student Services is a confidential process.
If a student is referred to Student Services, the Student Success Coach develops a relationship built on confidentiality and trust: student trust, parent trust, and teacher trust.
Adequate information is the foundation of trust—all involved must have information about the limits and processes of the relationship.
Students may be referred to Student Services for individual and/or small group discussion by their parents or guardians, school staff, a concerned friend, or themselves. When a referral is received, the Student Success Coach meets with the student(s) and the classroom teacher to determine the next steps.
A referral should be considered when you believe a student's problems go beyond your own experience and expertise, or when you feel uncomfortable helping a student with some issue. A referral may be made either because of the way the student's problems are interfering with their academic work or because observation of the student's personal behavior raises concerns apart from his or her academic work.
While many students seek help on their own, the family/friends/teachers exposure to the students increases the likelihood of signs or behaviors of distress in a student,
or that a student will ask you for help.
